Aunt Mae's Diary

Aunt Mae around 1919, in Dolgeville, NY

Introduction

Mae Youker Rockwell lived a quiet life in Dolgeville, New York. From 1914 to 1919 she kept a diary of her daily activities. After her death in the 1970's, her diaries were rescued from the dust bin and preserved for posterity. Mae Youker worked as a secretary by day, and a piano player in the silent movies by night. She lived in an age before radio and television. Aunt Mae didn't change history; she recorded it. To read her diaries is to step back in time to small town America.
