Camp Zoe Memories

2004 Letters

Like so many others, I was very excited to discover this site. What a great project you have created for so many! For me, Zoe was "the best of times...the worst of times." I did so much growing up there! I was a camper 1983-85, and just as I was getting reading to become a counselor, Zoe closed. It was one of the great disappointments of my young life. I still live in Cuba, Missouri where I grew up. I teach English and will be at Rolla Junior High next year. I am married, and we hope to start a family soon. Blessings to all!

Here's a note from former Zoe owners Jack and Lois Peters!

Jack and I are still in the Current River area operating Running River Canoe Rental and Campground. We are located just north of EE which goes into Pulltite. Most of you old counselors will remember it as Blake's Package Store! We have our business up for sale and plan to retire to Farmington, Mo., to be near Vicki and Joni and our grandkids. Brad is 15 and Jamie is 8 (Joni's two) and Andrew (Vicki's) is 13. We'd like to be able to go to their ballgames, band concerts, etc. We still think of the Camp Zoe years with fond memories, and it was amazing to me that I could go to the website and put faces on the names that I found after all this time. Camp Zoe has sold once again, to Jimmy and Tiffany Tebeau. Jimmy is the leader of the Schwag Band and they plan to hold concerts at the camp, beginning over Memorial Day this year. People will once again be encouraged to come there to camp and float the Current River. The last owners had too many rules and regs for any of our canoeists to be allowed on the property. Maybe we'll see some of you in the area once again. Thanks for the fond memories.

Lois and Jack Peters

Thank you!

Hi Fowler,

I went to Zoe with my cousin Vicki (Risku) in the late 1960s early 70's. Usually stayed one session, sometimes two. I became a "c" rider when my horse took off when frightened by a clap of thunder leaped over a small (seemed HUGE at the time) ravine and I was able to stay on as the horse galloped back to the stables!

My family holds our family reunions at trout lodge in potosi.....always have a campfire and ALWAYS sing zoe songs......my 15 yr. old son NEVER wants to hear little bunny foo foo ever again.....still loves Alice and gak goon though.

2 of my older sisters went to zoe before me. My one sister was sent to lose weight...she didn't know it. When my parents went to pick her up her shorts were held up by rope. My Mom knew that all the trips up and down the hill from the Lodge would do the trick....better than atkins?!

I remember canteen, mailcall with the letters on the cans, arts and crafts, archery and growing up at the dances etc. There are lots of things I have forgotten but its nice to have my memory jogged. My cousin sent me your website...oh what memories....how I wish my son could experience zoe!

Thanks, Laura (Burke) Morvillo

I grew up in Webster Groves, Missouri. Now live in Jupiter,Florida.

My Mom (JoAnn Overall) and her brother (David Bruhl) both went to Camp Zoe. My brother Matt, my sister Kerry and I all went in the 70's. So did my cousins Brad and Adrian Bruhl. Remember Billy Corrington or Bjorn and Boyer Barner? I'm 35 and some of the best memories of my life are from Camp Zoe. How 'bout that Snack Shack. I think I learned to skip rocks there.

Ted Overall

No skipping rocks at the snack shack, Ted. You might hit the slush machine.

I grew up in St. Louis suburbs Glendale and Webster Groves; while in Glendale, we lived down the street from the McMahans who owned the camp. I remember the car they had. It was a white Pontiac or Olds station wagon, probably a 1965 model, with "Camp Zoe" written in gold old-english lettering on the two front doors: "Round Spring, Mo.", in regular lettering below that. When I think of Camp Zoe I think of canoeing on Sinking Creek and throwing up somewhere along Route 19 on the way to camp.

I stumbled onto this website while researching a possible 2004 summer vacation. My son wants to do an Ozark canoe trip and I've been running Yahoo searches on familiar phrases like "Sinking Creek", "Akers Ferry", "Current River", "Alley Spring" etc.
