Camp Zoe Memories

1998 Letters

12/1/98

Thanks for taking the initiative on the Camp Zoe web site. I was wondering when somebody would go for it. It looks great. I'm still living in Nashville (been here since '81, with a year off as a ski bum in Vail during 85/86 ski season.) I started a community newspaper a little over three years ago. It started as a monthly and we just got it weekly this past spring. The name is Nashville In Review. It's sort of an alternative weekly, but with more of a hard new slant...I ran into Brian Bloebaum about five years ago at a local bar. When he was a camper, he was twelve years old and four feet tall. When I ran into him, he was six feet tall and 200 pounds (he recognized me). He's since left for Seattle or Portland. A few other Zoeites attended Vanderbilt University (located here in NashVegas) that I ran into over the years. Amy Drummond and Chris Lindholm [are] the first two I remember. They've since left...I'll get back with some more Zoe gossip when I have a chance.

Great to hear from you Boyer! I can recall some great times in Tent Cabin when we recorded our own call-in talk show during rest hour on my panasonic tape recorder. You have quite a dry wit!

My name is Martin Davies, my wife Virginia and I are close friends of Richard and Karen Huntington, the current owners of Camp Zoe. Richard emailed me with your information and remarkable web site - a labor of love if ever there was one! He asked that I send you some scanned pics of Camp Zoe...I've seen beautiful places around the world and Zoe stands up to all of them, but from what I can see of your creation here I know [you] agree. Richard and I spend almost [all] our summer weekends down at Zoe essentially working our asses, cutting grass and keeping Zoe together and in shape. Needless to say we would not invest so much of our valuable free time if the spell of Zoe wasn't strongly on us. We often sit around the campfire outside Cooks Cabin and talk about and try to imagine all the tales that Zoe has in it's nearly fifty years of operations. One can feel the spirit of Zoe, it's everywhere.

Martin Davies

Thank you Martin! I'm going to post the photos you sent me in an image gallery. They deserve their own section! The spell of Zoe is indeed powerful. It brings out the best in people. Thanks to you and the Huntingtons, the spirit of Zoe continues to thrive.

Impressed! Thank you so very much for putting together a "Zoe" page. I got your letter today and dashed to the computer, with lots of giggles which were soon to follow upon reading. I, too, have nothing but positive memories and experiences to recall from my years as well (76-81)...Here's one you might want to add: the importance of "Stairway to Heaven" at the dances in those days. It was mortifying not to be asked to dance for the last dance. To this day when I hear that song, I think about a weed-grown tennis court, trying to look cool and knots in my stomach!! No mention of the "camp cuisine", you chicken!...Holy cow, I've got to go find my old yearbooks. Thanks for putting all the effort into this web page. If you are interested in organizing some type of actual reunion, count on me, I'd be glad to help. Thanks again Fowler, I have something to add to my list of things I am thankful for tomorrow [Thanksgiving].

Carrie Sayers

Thanks Carrie! I too am thankful that I am not eating bologna sandwiches and bug juice for turkey day! Although I may summon my mother from the kitchen with a rousing rendition of "Come Out Cooks" if she doesn't burn the bird.
