Camp Zoe Memories
The Sing-along
The sing-along was a quintessential summer camp experience. Zoe standards included "Mountain Dew", "Titanic", "The Men from Nairobi", "Junior Birdman", and "John Jacob Jingleheimer-Schmidt". Our sing-along leader was counselor Kevin Dodge. Lei Moncrieff took over as lead singer in the 1980s. We sang songs in the mess hall after lunch and at every campfire gathering on the gravel bar. One camper recalls another sing-a-long opportunity from the 60's:
We had a big sing along each morning in new shelter before the morning activities...it was one of my favorite parts of camp.
Susan Strom, camper, 1966 - 1974.
The Sunday vespers service and the final campfire were somber events. Vespers was the non-religious Sunday night get-together where kids from each cabin sang a "serious" song. The theme of vespers was always something like peace, friendship, or ecology. "Blowin' in the Wind" was a Boys Cabin standard. During the final campfire we sang "Beautiful ol' Sinkin' Creek" (to the tune of the Missouri Waltz), and after 1976, "Hey Look Around You". 60's era campers remember "Today" and "For All We Know".
